Favorite Things #24

My kids love to play outside.

And the thing that the kids like to play with the most when they are outside are STICKS! Usually the longer the better! They like to pretend that they are swords, fishing poles, walking sticks, use them to dig holes, or pick up earth worms.

I love anything, toy or not, that can inspire the kids' creativity, so sticks definitely fit the bill!

But I do draw the line when it comes to bringing the sticks inside the house or car. If they find a particular stick that they really like, they can leave it on our front porch and play with it again when we go outside but I don't allow the kids to bring them indoors. There is enough clutter in the house as it is!

Do your kids like playing outside? What do they like to do or play with when they are outdoors?

  1. It's so great to witness the imagination play-out in children! J doesn't imagine that sticks are other things, but he likes to collect acorns and pinecones. They are small enough to bring inside but he quickly forgets about them, so I toss them pretty soon. Hope you all have a great Christmas!

  3. Yes, Baby C loves to play outside. I kind of steered away from the sticks until she is a little more coordinated. I can just see her falling down and the stick going in her eye. Her favorite part of nature are the leaves. I can understand you not wanting to bring sticks in the car or house. At first, I let her bring them in the car. What a mess! Now I tell her, nature stays with nature.

    1. Leaves are fun too! My kids like to kick them around when they see a big pile. I like your line about nature staying with nature, will use that next time.

  4. My kids enjoy playing with sticks too. We leave them outside as well, but has a spot for them so they can play again and again. I always get a little anxious when they run with sticks, though.

    1. Me too. Also when they use them as swords with each other.
