Pumpkin time

One of our favorite things to do in the fall is decorate our pumpkins. This year we tried a "new method." Click here to see last year's.

H wanted to try carving so I had her draw her design/face with a marker. We used a washable marker. H is a perfectionist when it comes to her artwork, so if she messed up she could easily wipe it away and re-draw.

Next the fun part?!... taking out the goop and seeds. This was H&N's first time and I was curious to see if they would enjoy it.
H's reaction: "This is disgusting", but happily helped me get the seeds out.
I assisted H at first but once she got the hang of it she was carving away.

N's reaction: He tried a little then decided he had enough, "I don't like the smell."
I got this Mini Pumpkin Push-Ins kit (Mr. Potato Head) on clearance last year. You probably could just use the pieces from the toy if you have some.
N had much more fun with this as you can see. I did carve out small holes so he can attach the pieces. The kids even had fun making "Picasso pumpkins" (Ex: sticking the nose on top of the head and eyes on the bottom.)
Our pumpkins are ready and chillin' outside!
How did you make your jack-o-lanterns? Do you carve? paint? stickers? kits?
Any tips on how to keep a carved pumpkin last longer?

  1. Good job, H, on carving your own pumpkin! I think the potato-head kit is so cuuuute! I think J participates in taking out the goop inside a carved pumpkin at preschool but I'm not that interested in goop. I'm with H on the "this is digusting" ;). At home, I tried to get him to participate but no luck, oh well!!! As for keeping the carved pumpkins longer, I've seen some posts online using vinegar, I think.

  2. We tried to get the kids involved in taking out the goop and seeds, but they wanted nothing to do with it. So my husband carved the pumpkin from start to finish. Haha. I will have to see if I can find a kit similar to yours on clearance this year. I think my kids will love that in the future.

    1. The idea of it is more fun to younger kids than actually doing it haha. I'm sure you can find a kit there's all kinds to choose from.

  3. They turned out great! H did awesome! Baby C didn't like the goop. So she just picked out the design she wanted and daddy carved it.

Yea the goop is not all that fun and can be pretty messy haha. What design did Baby C pick?
