Summer Reading

In July E1 is attending a Summer Reading Program through our school district. It has been a really great experience for many reasons.  First he gets to take the school bus to and from school which is great practice for when he starts kindergarten in the Fall. Second, he is learning to be more independent which is another great lesson to prepare him for kindergarten. And last but not least he gets to read lots of books!

He even gets books from this program that we get to keep, so it means his sisters and brother get to enjoy them as well. We have read about picking blueberries and then gone to pick blueberries ourselves over the weekend. And learned about where animals hibernate, about farms, how a farmer makes a living, and about fiction and non-fiction.

Here is a sampling of some of the books we have read so far:

Blueberries For Sal (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition)

I can't wait to see what other books we will be getting and what adventures we will be going on.

Before ending this post, here is a fun recommendation for parents who have kids starting kindergarten or maybe even a new school--a book that really helped E1 get ready to go on the bus was Pete The Cat--Rocking In My School Shoes.

Do you enjoy reading books? I love reading books, just wish I had more time/energy these days to read more. What is on yours and/or your kids summer reading list?

  2. What great practice for the kindergarten -- riding the bus and being independent! Great practice for him and you as parents ;). Love that you can keep some of the books, and then relate what's in the book (like fruit picking) and actually doing it! I wish I had more time to read too. Nevertheless, I love that J loves to read and our favorites now are from his birthday party. "Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site" and "I am a big brother". I love seeing J become more and more interested and understanding about what having a Mei Mei and being a big brother can mean.

    1. J will be a great big brother...that's great that he got a book about it too! Are you guys getting him a gift from Mei Mei?

    2. A few small toys. Though I'm sure if we didn't give it to him from Mei Mei, he'd be happy with her anyways ;). It's not like any of our parents gave us presents from our Mei Meis ;).

  3. I love that he is riding the bus all by himself. Baby C talks about the bus all the time. I love to read, but like you, I don't have as much time as I used to before having Baby C. We enjoy reading all sorts of books together.

  4. How long and how often is his summer reading program? I think it's great. By the way WE LOVE all the Pete the Cat books. The online songs are SO catchy.

    1. It is from July 1st to 25th, meets M-TH. I have been reading some of the other Pete the Cat books with the kids, and we are totally enjoying them as well! Haven't checked out the music online though...will have to do that soon!
