Planning Summer Activities

I've been MIA for a while, mainly because I've been dealing with a few kid related issues that I'll try to share in the future when I have a better grasp on everything and can do a more thorough post on them.

But now I want to talk about planning summer activities! The weather is starting to get warmer where we live and we are spending more time outdoors these days. The 3 older E kids are also starting to get to know some new kids in our neighborhood and playing with them. I'm starting to experience kids coming to our door and asking if the kids can come out and play. It's a little weird and exciting at the same time, I'm not quite used to my kids being old enough for this but I'm really happy they are making new friends and being outside more.

John and I have been coming up with a summer list and make some plans for the warm days to come. E1, E2, and E3 will be attending a summer camp at our church for a week. And E1 will be attending a pre-K summer reading program for the whole of July. We still have plenty of weekends to fill up though.

We decided that this summer the one big activity we wanted to do together was biking. We got the kids their helmets and are in the process of finding some 2nd hand bikes for them on Craigslist. It has been MANY years since I last biked but supposedly the saying is that you never forget right? So I need to find a bike as well and see if the saying is true. This is the one big activity we want to do this summer, other things in our list are as follows:

1) Go to the zoo at least one more time before our membership expires.
2) Go to Please Touch Museum before our membership expires.
3) Have a picnic at the park at least one time.
4) Plant something with the kids.
5) Fly a kite with the kids.
6) Take the kids to see a lighthouse.
7) Go to the beach at least one time.
8) Make our own bubble solution and attempt to make huge bubbles.
9) Go fruit picking.

In general we want to do our best to spend as much time outside as possible.

Do you have any summer plans? Would love to hear what they are!

Zi

  1. I love your ideas. We plan to do some biking, too, but my main goal this summer is to teach the kids to do stuff at home. We're going to cook, sew, knit, do laundry, and clean up the house! Sounds very domestic, but I think it's time for the kids to learn how to take care of themselves. I'm not going to be able to do it for them forever!

  2. What a great list! Thanks for sharing. I haven't thought too much about summer activities other than going to the aquarium before school gets out (and it's crazy busy), heading to the beach this weekend, and having a baby :)

  3. Hope the kiddos are ok, Zi! As for your summer list, sounds wonderful to be outside! Oooo, a lighthouse. How fun! Hope there is one nearby! And I love the idea of going to the beach, wouldn't be summer without one trip right? This summer, we're planning to go fruit-picking, prolly no beach trip since we've got baby #2 coming in July. Maybe fireworks, at least. My work allows us on the grounds for the city fireworks show. J was too young before, but I think this year might be the year! We had planned to sign J up for swim lessons, but haven't been on the ball.

    1. Thanks Lisa! The kids are good. Believe there is a lighthouse in Cape May which isn't too far away. Fireworks sound like fun! The kids never stay awake long enough to really see them, maybe this year =) We've been talking about swim lessons as well but still haven't really taken action yet either.

    2. If you're planning a trip to Cape May, you can consider taking the ferry (either as a foot or car passenger) to Lewes, Delaware. Last year we went from Lewes to Cape May for a day and it was fun, we were thinking about checking out the Cape May Zoo but it was too far away from the Ferry which requires a 30 mins Bus Ride.

    3. Good tip Alan, thanks! I heard Lewes has some good shopping too =) We are definitely planning to go to the zoo since the kids love animals. So not sure if we will be able to make to the ferry since we are probably only going for a day. But will keep it in mind.

  4. I have similar activities on the list - go to the zoo, picnic, fruit picking. Last year, Will was still young and couldn't walk. This summer, it should be a lot of fun taking him places. I also want to visit Please Touch Museum. We are going to Myrtle Beach in June so that will be another beach vacation for us.

  5. We go to lots of parks and do lots of hiking in the summer time. My husband likes to mountain bike and there is usually fun activities at the bottom of the mountain for kids. We also have a community pool now. Yay! At the end of July, we get to go to Nashville!!! Woohoo!!! I'm so excited. :)

  6. What a fun list of things you have planned for this summer. I like the idea of a list, where you can pick things when the mood/weather strike right. I haven't made an official list of things we are planning to do, but our unofficial list includes strawberry picking, White Sox games, camping in Michigan, weekend on Cape Cod, going to the splash park, biking for fun/exercise/transportation and camping in Door County.

  9. Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was super
long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm
thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any suggestions for novice blog writers? I'd
    really appreciate it.
