Bizarre foods?

My husband & I enjoy watching Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. This guy has one strong stomach. It's always interesting to see his reaction when it he goes to Asia and tries out their bizarre foods. The one episode we laugh about is when he tried a durian. Don't know what that is read Zi's post about durian here.

Funny how certain foods may seem bizarre to some but taste so delicious to others. After Easter service we went out for dim sum with my parents and sister. It's a treat for us since we don't get to go that often. Dim sum is a style of Cantonese food served in small portions in steamer baskets or plates. It's usually carted around the restaurant where you can order as they come by your table. One of my favorites is the fung zau / phoenix claws a.k.a chicken feet.

Either your mouth is watering or you're cringing right now. I'm usually the only want who really wants it. But to my surprise when N saw it he asked for some. So I gave him a small piece and waited for his reaction... he nodded his head and said "Mmmm, I want more!"  Haha that is my boy!

What is your favorite "bizarre food" or most bizarre food you've ever tried?

Thanks for reading!
Eva

  1. My mom loves the chicken feet from dim sum. I've had it and I don't love it but I don't hate it either. One time my parents tricked me into eating frog by telling me it was chicken. It tasted like mushy chicken... I was not a fan!

    1. Well there's always tomorrow where you can try something new ; ) Does your husband like to try bizarre foods or just watch others eat it?

  4. Yea, Alan & I looooove chicken feet. It's the criteria by which we judge any dim sum place :). Love the ones at Ocean City. Just the right amount of spice and salt and the skin is perfectly prepared. I saw that Zimmerman is starting a new series called Bizarre Foods America, which is so awesome so that US viewers don't think that the only bizarre foods are across the ocean. I used to think that Zimmerman was exploiting other cultures' food with his show, but I heard him talk about the show and he really is trying to open the minds of people everywhere. I still can't watch the show though. I couldn't eat 80% of the stuff he eats ;).

    1. Do you mean the Ocean City in Philly (chinatown)?
Yes we saw the new series :) Haha I don't think I could eat many of the things either but I enjoy watching him slurp it up... or cringe. :P

  5. We went to dim sum for Chinese New Year and then we brought a group back in March. We tried chicken's feet and I wasn't impressed. Not enough meat. Was I missing something?

  6. Hi Nilsa! No, I don't think there's really any meat on chicken feet. It's pretty much just skin and some tendons. But how they cook and flavor it makes the big difference whether it's good chicken feet or not. :)
