Book vs. E-reader

Going to the library is one of the favorite things my kids love to do. Our local library has an amazing children’s section, from computers to puzzles, activity pages to a dollhouse, a puppet area and the beloved wooden train track table. And of course a huge selection of great books!

One of my summer jobs as a teen was working in the local library. My favorite section to work in was the children’s section. I loved seeing the new books coming in every week. I’d flip through them and enjoy seeing a variety of illustrators. How fun would it be to write and illustrate a book?

I don’t know about you, but one of the things I love about reading is to be able to flip through the pages and enjoy that new book smell. I know these days people have their e-readers and downloads.
It’s compact; you can store a number of books and have plenty of shelf space left at home. I love technology and new gadgets, however I don’t see myself buying one anytime soon. Call me old school but I still enjoy reading in print and turning pages, not swiping a screen. Illustrations look better to me on paper, it’s like art at my fingertips. So for now, I will continue to borrow and buy my kids good old books.

What do you prefer a book or e-reader?

  1. Definitely books...the paper between the fingers, the weight of the book between your hands, the sound of pages turning. And a book is patient; it's not glowing in my face, trying to give the impression that it's the most important thing in the room. It doesn't whine, complaining that its batteries need to be fed or else it'll hold my reading hostage. At the end of the day, I find that the most enjoyable things in life are never the most expedient or efficient, but what can be lavishly savored. :)

    1. Well said PD! I (Zi) also prefer a book, it just isn't the same on an e-reader!

  2. I love an e-reader for travel and also so I don't have bookshelves full of books! But for kids' books, I definitely vote REAL ones because flipping them IS so fun and I think they need to learn that art before right to technology. Lucky we don't have an iPad! I like to read REAL magazines too. I know the e-versions have cool photos and are interactive, but still. Wouldn't you hate the smell of perfume inserts ;).

  3. Yes the little ones definitely need to learn finger dexterity first :) A very important skill! hehe
Trust me it will take them seconds to learn how to swipe and click. We have an iTouch. I'm floored when N knows how to find what he wants on there. And yes, I like to read REAL magazines too!

  4. I love books, too! But I'll read a book on my iPhone or iPad when traveling. I was able to download Pride & Predjudice for free!
